Meghan Markle would still hold a royal title if she was stripped of her Duchess of Sussex title, but it would confuse some people, says commentator.
Meghan Markle would still hold a royal title even if she were to lose the Duchess of Sussex style but that could baffle some people, a royal commentator has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s titles have been at the centre of discussions in the last year as many believe that they should not possess or use them to boost their status in their ventures across the pond.
But even if King Charles was to strip them of their titles, Meghan would still be known as Princess Henry.
Technically, women who are married to a British prince are subsequently styled with their husband’s names, like Princess Michael of Kent, who adopted the feminine form of her husband’s name because he does not hold another title.
Harry can’t be stripped of his prince title as it’s his birthright unless done so after an act of Parliament, thus Meghan would be known as Princess Henry if she did not have the Duchess title.
But a royal expert said this title might be confusing to some people, especially those who are not from Britain.
Majesty Magazine’s Editor in Chief Ingrid Seward told the Royal Beat: “I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because, if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood and Meghan instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, [would] be Princess Henry… That really would [confuse the Americans].
“I think [it’s] probably best just to leave it because it looks unkind, it looks unnecessary.
“The Queen gave them the titles, let them keep them – they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway.
“I think the best thing is to leave them, ignore them, and let them get on with it – which is really what the Palace and the Royal Family are doing.”
Megan also holds the titles of Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness Kilkeel since her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018.
However, even though their first-born son, Prince Archie, would use his father’s secondary title, the Earl of Dumbarton, it was reported by the Telegraph that the Sussexes did not wish for him to do so as they didn’t want him to carry a title which included the word “dumb” in it.
The report stated: “They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it began with the word ‘dumb’ [and] they were worried about how that might look.”
